De-stress and self love

I have been out of my mind stressed; maybe more stressed than I have ever been before. I thought I handled stress well because I’ve always been kinda go with the flow, everything will work out, laid back…..WELLLLLL not anymore. I’m a freak now.  I get stressed. Here’s why; I’m still working semi night shift in the ER (3am-3pm or 3am-11am), still driving an hour both ways to work, have two dogs instead of one, money, and time. Why is this stressing me out more than normal? Well I would say the fact that I’m in my 3rd semester of grad school has a big part to play in it. Getting my Doctorate degree might be the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. It’s effort, it’s time, it’s patience, it’s perseverance, it’s time management, it’s saying no to everything I wanna say yes to, it’s missing out on time with friends and family, and it’s freaking money. I’ve had to take a step back and tell myself “you’re being crazy.” Here are some things I’ve learned in the process to make my life maybe a little easier at times, give myself peace of mind, and reduce stress.

Read for fun before bed

I have a stack of books I bought over the holidays that I have not gotten to yet because of school reading. I now devote time before bed, after I get out the shower to read, even if it’s 1 chapter


because I can’t keep my eyes open any longer. Its an escape.

Eucalyptus hanging from shower head

Eucalyptus has been shown to reduce stress, provide mental clarity, is a mood enhancer, antiseptic and an anti-inflammatory. If you hang a bunch of eucalyptus from shower head, and take a hot shower the smell is heavenly. You can buy Eucalyptus at Trader Joes for $2.99 for a bunch.

Have you seen those memes about face masks fixing everything. I don’t know what it is but as soon as its on; everything feels ok. Here’s a list of some of the best face masks for every skin type and budget.

Peppermint oil in humidifier next to bed

peppermint is a great oil for headaches and migraines. After working and then having my head stuck in a pathophysiology or pharmacology book for 5 more hours this peppermint oil allows me to wake up for work at 130am headache free.


Hire Dog Walker

We hired dog walkers; I felt like I was neglecting the dogs. So a company called Royal Oak Dog Walkers comes to our house 3x a week. They use an app called pet check. When they get to your house they scan a barcode that lets you know that they have arrived, then you can track the walk from check in to check out. The dog walkers take pictures on the walk, write notes, let you know if your dog went to the bathroom, and a GPS map of where they went is all uploaded onto their app. The dogs love it, and I love it even more.
